10th September 2014 – 9am – 1:30pm
Interested to learn acupuncture? Then you’ll be very pleased to hear that ICOM is offering a taster day to give you first- hand experience of what it would be like studying this fascinating and rewarding subject.
Welcome and Introduction
The day will begin at 9:00 am for Registration and a warm Welcome from our Principal.
This will be followed by an introduction to Chinese medicine and acupuncture that will give an insight into the healing art and science of acupuncture and also give context to its role as a medicine system in today’s world.
You will gain an understanding about the history of acupuncture as well as the different styles of treatment used in different countries. Also explained will be the key aspects of the Chinese Medicine theories taught at ICOM and how these are integrated within our course.
ICOM teaches all the main acupuncture approaches, including 5 Element theory, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Stems and Branches acupuncture. No other course in the UK offers this unique integration of treatment styles.
Chinese medicine intro lecture
Elio Basagni will then introduce to you the basic principles of Chinese medicine. Elio will explain the primary understandings necessary to practice acupuncture, the theories of yin and yang, the five elements and how these relate to our body in clinical practice.
You will gain an insight into the world of human energetics and how an acupuncturist is able to work with this system in order to promote good health and bring about healing.
Point location taster lecture (practical)
Sarah Major, Clinic Director, senior lecturer, and practitioner, will introduce you to the important subject of point location. The location and functions of the 361 main acupuncture points of the body are covered in detail on ICOM’s full acupuncture course, as well as a further selection of ‘extra points’ that are not located on any of the meridian pathways.
However, during this taster day Sarah will introduce you briefly to the meridians of the body as well and will explain some acupuncture points that are commonly used in treatment. You will learn methods used for locating the points as well as understand a few of the more practical uses in both acupuncture and acupressure treatment.
Practical clinic skills
The final part of the taster day will comprise a session designed to demonstrate some of the practical clinical skills used during acupuncture treatment. This will be a hands-on workshop with two of our clinic supervisors, Sarah Major and Steve West. Sarah and Steve will explain how they use various diagnostic methods including:
- Pulse diagnosis
- Face and body diagnosis
- Abdominal diagnosis
- Tongue diagnosis
From these (and other) diagnostic methods, our supervisors will show you how they make decisions for an effective treatment strategy. Sarah and Steve will also explain different treatment methods including acupuncture, acupressure, moxibustion and cupping.
