We are very pleased to announce that for our specialist acupuncture course, we have recent new additions to the teaching staff here at ICOM. One of our new colleagues is Stephen West, an ex student of the ICOM acupuncture college here in East Grinstead, West Sussex.
Stephen graduated in the summer of 2004 with a Bsc Hons degree in Oriental Medicine and Acupuncture. Following his departure as a student from ICOM all those years ago, Stephen took a year out to travel extensively through Asia and has since planted roots back here in the South East.
Stephen currently practices acupuncture in Tunbridge Wells, Kent and Horsham, West Sussex. We are very happy to welcome him back to the college, but this time as a member of the teaching team for our acupuncture course here at ICOM.
What part of the Acupuncture Course will Stephen be teaching?
Stephen has started teaching the practical, supervised clinic sessions to our 2nd and 3rd year students. This part of the acupuncture course is a very hands on segment for both the students and the practitioner supervising them.
The format of a typical supervised clinic day here at ICOM is arranged by each year being split up into smaller groups, typically 3-4 students per group with one supervisor. Each student takes it in turns to see a patient from start to finish, going through the consultation, various diagnostic procedures that we teach here and then carrying out the actual treatment itself. This is all under the watchful eye and guidance of the supervisor and also with the other students in the group quietly observing but also participating collaboratively in order to support the lead student.
This part of the acupuncture course offered here at ICOM is really where theory turns into practice and the students get a chance to apply what they have learned to a real patient. For this subject, we are very pleased to have a variety of diverse supervisors, each with a great deal of experience and knowledge. This allows the students to gain first hand the invaluable experience from the supervisors they are working with.
What Stephen has to say about teaching at ICOM
Stephen joined the teaching team back in May 2013 and has since adapted to the way of life as a teacher here at our acupuncture college.
“It’s great to be back in the ICOM environment again and also very rewarding to be able to give something back through my experience. The college provides a great place to work for both the students and the teachers and I’ve found myself really enjoying not only helping the students but also being back in touch with the great energy here at the college. ICOM really does have a great vibe to the place and it’s really great to be back as part of the team”.
ICOM’s Acupuncture Course and its teachers
Here at ICOM we pride ourselves on the high standards of training we provide to our students, doing everything we can to shape and mould them into the best possible acupuncturists they can be. For this reason we require all our teachers to be of a very high standard, both as practitioners and teachers. Over time, each of our highly experienced practitioner-teachers are also required to complete a PGCE (postgraduate certificate in education) course to further assist their abilities in delivering the material and supporting and enhancing the learning experience of the of the students on our acupuncture course.
