Stephanie Downey’s interest in health began in 1973 with her training as a Registered General Nurse in Cambridge and later specialising in Accident and Emergency nursing in London. After completing a post graduate degree in Medical Anthropology she became interested in holistic medicine and Chinese philosophy and studied Chinese medicine at the International College of Oriental Medicine, qualifying as an acupuncturist in 1985. Since then she has been practising acupuncture in Brighton for nearly 40 years after establishing the Brighton Acupuncture Clinic.
Stephanie studied Paediatric acupuncture with Julian Scott in 1987 and worked for over 25 years at the Dolphin House Children’s charity which provided low cost complementary therapies to children and their families. Her work developed over the years as she gained more experience and undertook regular post graduate courses. As well as practising acupuncture in a busy children’s clinic she studied and specialised in Fertility, Pregnancy and women’s health. She is a long standing member of ACT (the Acupuncture Childbirth Team in Brighton) and works regularly with local midwives to promote acupuncture for all areas of fertility and pregnancy.
Another busy part of her acupuncture practice is treating musculoskeletal disorders and sports injuries. She has benefited from studying with world renowned teachers to improve her knowledge and skills in this area. Other current areas of interest include nutritional therapies, diet, lifestyle, psycho emotional support and working with patients undergoing chemotherapy, radiotherapy and other cancer treatments. She enjoys the fascinating and varied experience of general practice and continues to work in Brighton offering acupuncture to both adults and children.
