This is a recording of a three day seminar that looked at Chinese Medicine through the characters and reveal their meaning. Deborah Woolf focuses on texts on the twelve zangfu from Suwen 2, Suwen 4, Suwen 5 and Suwen 8. She then uses these texts to illustrate the fundamental descriptions of the characters used for the zangfu.

Each zangfu organ has a ‘cluster’ of Chinese terms that are used specifically with it: for instance, the classics state to ‘firm the spleen’ rather than the looser idea of to ‘tonify the spleen’. Chinese medical terminology represents a vital link to our interpretation of the Chinese Medicine itself.

Day 1 covered Liver and Heart, day 2 covered Lungs and Kidneys, day 3 covered Spleen and Fu organs.

Tutor: Deborah Woolf

Deborah Woolf is an experienced and enthusiastic teacher of Classical Chinese Medicine and Philosophy. She has studied Classical Chinese for over 20 years, to enhance her knowledge and understanding of Chinese Medicine. Her passion for the language of ancient Chinese medical texts enables direct interpretation for practitioners of Chinese Medicine.

She has an MA in Chinese Medical History from UCL and has completed her PhD thesis on wuyun liuqi, also at UCL. She studied 3 months in Taiwan and 3 months in Beijing, following Chinese language courses. She has followed Elisabeth Rochat de la Vallée for 25 years and is still studying and translating Classical Chinese and Classical Chinese medical texts.

Deborah runs and works in a busy clinic in Brighton, applying her understanding of classical Chinese Medicine on an everyday basis. She teaches for Dr Edward Neal, and has lectured all over the world.
