Basics of Qigong Teaching

£250

With John Millar
Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 October 2026

This two day Basics of Qigong Teaching course will enable you to develop your qigong practice and provide basic skills required to share simple qigong techniques.

Description

The intention of the Basics of Qigong Teaching course is to offer a short, well-rounded programme of training that enables you to develop and evolve your personal qigong

practice while providing you with the basic skills required to share simple qigong techniques.

The focus of the training is on 4 basic movements that underpin the majority of current qigong forms and can be learned in a few repetitions. Embracing the simplicity of these movements means that we can take far longer exploring key principles, understanding adaptations and discussing teaching methodologies.

The course is designed as a standalone training that will provide you with the ability to share these simple methods as an adjunct to our existing therapeutic practice, while also being the gateway into our longer Teacher Training Programme that enables anyone with an interest in qigong to qualify as a Qigong Teacher and run classes and workshops.

Aims

The aim of this course is twofold.

For existing holistic/TCM health professionals – You will learn simplified Qigong techniques that are proven to work as short interventions that can be shared with your clients.

For those wanting to teach Qigong – This course will introduce you to the basics of teaching qigong using 4 simple techniques that can then be extended into full classes and workshops with the appropriate Teacher Training.

It’s worth saying that this is not a full qigong teaching course, it is an introduction to teaching simplified techniques in order to address common problems in a safe, adaptable and effective way.

For a more comprehensive training, we offer a fully accredited programme that enables you to teach classes and workshops.

Course Outline

The initial focus of the training is on learning the form, but over the course of the two days the focus of the training shifts from understanding the underlying principles and depth of practice towards building confidence in adapting and teaching the forms in a safe and effective manner.

In broad terms the main areas taught are listed below:

Form

  • 4 basic movements – Exploring and learning the 4 basic movements and some simple physical progressions from these movements.
  • The concept of mastery – Understanding the point at which we can support others in moving from simply repeating a movement to gaining a real benefit from it.
  • Physical adaptations – Taking time to understand how to use physical adaptations that do not restrict the potential of the technique.
  • Energetic adaptations – Developing an understanding of how to shift the energetic focus in a way that is supportive of sustainable change.

Theory

  • Balancing Hun and Po – The importance of balancing the corporeal and ethereal aspects of self and how to do this through Qigong.
  • Releasing and Returning – Understanding the mechanism of releasing and returning on a physical, mental and emotional level.
  • Jing Qi and Shen – Developing a basic understanding of the physical, energetic and mental aspects of self and how to balance them.
  • Qi, Space and Information – Understanding the concepts of Qi, Space and Information as a guiding principle for teaching and personal practice.

Teaching

  • Learning Styles – A brief introduction to the implication of learning styles on the way we interact with Qigong and the way in which we share it with others.
  • Teaching Methods – Developing different approaches to teaching in order to address a range of Learning Styles.
  • Teaching Practice – Gaining confidence in your ability to have impact in teaching.
  • Integration as a teaching aim – Understanding how to teach in a way that encourages both individual practice and integration of techniques into everyday life.
  • Contraindications and Health and Safety – Learning how to recognise and deal with contraindications and health and safety issues.

Certification

Certification is offered at two levels on this training depending on the experience that you bring into the training.

If you are already working as a qualified healthcare professional who is already licensed to work one to one with clients, a practitioner certificate is awarded on successful completion of this training.

If you are not currently working as a qualified healthcare professional, or you elect to not be assessed at the end of the training, you will be offered an attendance certificate. In addition to this, the course is accredited as carrying 11 hours of CPD.

About John Millar

John Millar wearing white top standing in a field with grass and treesHaving been introduced to Qigong in 1997 by my Reiki teacher, I immediately knew it was something that made sense to me. I started searching for a teacher and was soon studying with some amazing teachers from China, the UK and Australasia.

Over the next 12 years I studied in 7 different styles of qigong, being sanctioned to teach in 4 of those styles, but fairly quickly it became clear that I needed to devote myself to a single form, and the form that worked best for me was Zhineng Qigong.

Since becoming a full time teacher in 2010, Zhineng Qigong has provided me with the depth of practice, and the flexibility of approach to work  with a broad range of clients.

As one of the co-founders of the 3 Monkeys School of Qigong, I have been training qigong teachers since 2013. This work also led to teaching collaborations with Jianshe Liu from Hexianju Qigong Centre, Lu and Ling of Dao Qi World, Gao Yuan of Big Qi Field, and a few other well regarded Chinese Qigong centres.

On the Corporate side, a decade of working in Leadership Development, Soft Skills Training and Corporate Wellbeing in the UK, mainland Europe and Middle East led to an international reputation as an innovative, engaging training and speaker who brings a broad range of business understanding together with Qigong in order to create real change.

In Integrative Medicine, close ties with the College of Medicine, led to collaborations with the University of Wales Trinity St David and University of Central Lancashire before getting involved in long term academic and medical research with the University of Southampton, Oxford University and Oxford Health around the use of Qigong in a western medical setting.

Working with one of the UK’s leading Parkinson’s charities has also led to the development of new approaches to bringing Qigong into the Parkinson’s community and the development of training for Qigong teachers to work in similar ways.

I believe that Qigong should be simple enough to be accessible while being profound enough to offer constant learning and insight. It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been practicing , we are all learning and we can all learn from each other.
